media essay

Essay media

In the music video the band has been represented to be free spirited this is displayed through the appearances of the characters which is enhanced by the outfits. As the singer wears numerous necklaces adding to this eclectic look. She also wears a flowery top associating the band to nature, which is also demonstrated through the projection of the beach scene in the background. Using a beach horizon creates a calm atmosphere which goes hand in hand with the laidback band members characters. The beach is a way of immersing people putting them in a dreamy state, allowing them to imagine themselves on the beach. Involving an open space in which you are able to be free and too you can express yourselves freely.

The band fits a stereotype towards hippie druggie characters which is typically negative due to the drugs associated with these stereotypes. However, in this case they are viewed as happy and fun. This is shown by the movement in which they are dancing, as well as their facial expressions. In which they are laughing and smiling, and you get a sense that they are not taking themselves too seriously. This is clear through the outfits they wear as they look almost that this is their everyday attire. Using Richard Dyers star theory shows how the band are constructed. Engaging the audience through their shared set of values appealing to teens in whom admire and share these liberal mindsets.

As displayed in the digipak I have represented one of the band members to be youthful and chilled bringing in this idea of the younger generation having little worries and in a sense being free. In this image a fisheye lens used allows the image to stretch across wider, making the picture appear distorted enhancing a more abstract aesthetic. It also connects the audience to the theme of skaters and surfers who often film using a fisheye lens. The lens puts emphasis on the sunglasses in the image which demonstrates a stylish element to the band however it also adds to the calm beachy personas of the band members, as you associate beach with sunglasses. Thus, connecting our video which features the beach projection to the digipak.

Using an indie pop genre, it is typical to create a brand which includes this vibey chilled element appealing to younger audiences. In the music video for this campaign, we can see that the slow, paced shots frequently used in the music video represent how the bands persona is very much relaxed. Reflecting how they are calm going against the typical stereotypes given to teenagers. It also indicates through the wide camera angle shots which fits the whole band in together, that the group are all friends and there is no level of status. Then using a shot in which involves the camera movement to tilt and go with the movement relates back to the druggie psychedelic element the band portray. Shown through the Instagram with using this psychedelic font.

Branding is key for producing a band and in our social media we constructed this. Using Instagram, we replicated aspects displayed in the music video. Taking the neon colours and purple tones we used throughout the video and including them in Instagram posts. Thus, creating band recognition for the audience, and building a connection between the music video and the Instagram. Building a familiar style with the audience using close ups of her face, and shots of each band member building this personal relationship between the audience and the artists. This image taken from the Instagram displays a connection between the music video and the social media, involving both the moon and a similar purple tone. It also demonstrates how the band display a close friendship through how one of them has his head rested on the other. From this it creates this desire for the audience to be friends with the group as it shows that the band are close and good friends. Consistently posting images of the band together creates a memorable visual image of the band being this close neat friendship group. Dyer believes that’s star personas are constructed by familiarising audiences with the visual image of the artist. Using this idea we used repeated close up shots of our singer in the music video, as well as doing this on the Instagram. Doing this creates a memorable face for the audience.

In the digipak the images used are a way of celebrating individuality this engages a large audience. Bringing in the idea of personal identity as fans are able to recognise this through the images used. Demonstrating diversity in the band suggesting that the band are accepting of everyone no matter what gender sexuality or race. Reaching out to audiences that potentially struggle with these issues and making them an open place of comfort to come too. As they can share their lives and values.

One of the uses the audience get from the music video opens a window into this spiritual lifestyle following these liberal values, which could be unrealistic in some teenager’s cases. As the music video displays how the band are freely doing what they want. The use of lighting to create the aura shots reveals a more spiritual lifestyle which audiences may not be used. Opening up a new world which could seem magical, and due to the bold vibrant colours, it draws you in captivating the audience.

For our social media we have looked into key conventions, taking aspects which worked effectively in creating a clear band representation. Using Bombay bicycle club as an example as the majority of their content is relaxed and displays how the band are normal people who are just friends. They also often publish posters and graphic elements showing a more creative aspect to them. Using this we chose to represent our band in a stereotypical manner of a young hippie character in order to engage a younger audience. Looking into this more hippie side of the indie genre often the key conventions associated with this is colour, therefore we displayed this throughout our music video. This was a big element of our video being shown in both the lighting and costume. Using an aura shot to layer the coloured shots over one another, using contrasting colours such as orange and blue which put emphasis on the action being aura. Thus, linking the theme of aura to the video. We also displayed this in their colourful outfit again focusing the attention on the characters.

Throughout our Instagram we have portrayed the band to come across as chilled and relaxed using the majority of the images of them just hanging out oppose to them posing for a shoot. For this hippie band typically, you would associate that with chilled and calm therefore posting less posed shots adds to that idea of the band being viewed as more calm. In the media the theme of druggie psychedelic characters is often represented in a negative way. Resulting in parents not wanting their kids to buy music and follow artists who are known for this therefore, we felt it was important to subvert this stereotype making it appealing to a more family friendly audience. Turning the druggie element into a positive side, only taking the colour and wavy aspects from it. Creating a fun lively atmosphere.

evaluation of shoot

Day before shoot day

The day before the shoot day Pandora and I went to the studio to help prepare for the shoot day making the most of our time slot we had the following day. This included building the unfinished bits of the set such as placing the wooden planks on the floor in an arrangement we thought worked the best. We also added in sand around the wooden planks and to cover any corners which did not have any wood. This helped add a more beach element to our video enhancing the free spirited idea for our band. Pandora and I also collected together all the decorations and props we were going to use in other set ups into piles in the studio to save time the following day finding props. Then we got our band to come to the studio when the set was finished for a rehearsal, this allowed the band to feel comfortable and get to grips with the surrounding. We also got to get another opinion on the set to make any last minute changes. Doing all of this allowed the morning of the shoot to run smoothly as everything was prepared before hand. Therefore when the band gathered in the morning all we had to do was makeup and jewellery as we had pre decided on outfits so we did last minute touches to hair and makeup and jewlerlly. This was not stressful as pandora and I had organised everything in advance. However we were unsure if Alexa and Maia were coming that day as we had not seen them that week whilst we were preparing for the shoot, this meant we could not get their opinion on the set, on how it looks. However they arrived and they liked the look of the set. As it worked effectively matching our concept of free spirited hippies. The sand also added to the concept enhancing it, as well as the wood as this clearly represented a beach shack, through the rustic woody feel.

Shoot day

When we started filming we initially planned each role for each person however when we started we all inputted towards everything helping each other towards different aspects of roles. We also switched each time with the camera person as this was a crucial element of shooting the video. I started by telling everyone what to do getting them into positions and calling to role the camera. It took me a few goes until I got to grips with it after this I felt more confident with doing it, until it become much easier for me. When looking back on the whole shoot day for me I felt I did the best in making the band feel comfortable as there was some scenes which was quite awkward for the band and they did not feel comfortable in. However I felt I was quite goof friends with them so I helped them by making them feel comfortable by joining in with them and encouraging them to carry on. This particularly helped when we shot the aura scenes as they had to individually dance without really being showed what to do. Therefore I made them feel comfotsbale in that environment. I also felt on the shoot day I really helped with the filming as I do photography I feel more comfortable with using a camera compared to the rest of my group.

Issues we faced

We had a few minor issues along the way, but the worst one was to do with the musical instruments. As pandora and I organised the set and props the day before this included getting the instruments, we both are not musical so we got what we thought was right however, one of the guitar straps did not fit into the guitar. This meant we had to go look for another one and the start of the day. This did not effect anything however it did add an element of stress for the start if the day. This was quickly solved when we found it and started straight away. Another small issue we had was the band members getting slightly bored and tired which meant they did not perform with full energy and to the standard we wanted, therefore we swapped them in and out giving each person a break every so often when we could. This meant they could sit outside and just have a moment to relax. From doing this I felt we managed our actors well as when they would come back on set they would have a lot more energy. I also felt that me encouraging each person showed their full skills and they did not shy away. However from teh shoot day I wish that the aura shots were better as we did not have much time to do lots os takes so the actors only had one shot to do this.

After shoot day

Looking back on the shoot day the part I enjoyed the most was the card scene as this wa purely experimental, and we did not feature it in our video but it was very enjoyable filming it. Adjusting the lights and scenery to create the most effective scene. I am not looking forward to seeing the aura shots as these were also somewhat experimental with the lighting, as we discussed we would layer the videos on top of each other and I was unsure how this would turn out. So I am looking forward to seeing that segment of the video and I think that element is the most fun as it demonstrates the youthfulness of the band clearly as they are having fun dancing freely. My group worked alright together we all helped each other out, however from filming the shoot day it has taught me that it is helpful working in a group rather then solo so if I was to do this again I would try and work better as a group as it would improve the video massively. Instead of arguing over bits we disagreed on.

analysis of similar product

Using a similar music genre to our band this being Wolf Alice, I have re searched further into their other videos to help my group create a similar product.

I chose this video as it uses this effect which would be very effective in our video. It brings in the element of psychedelic as it is blurred and this escapism from reality. We would use this when filming are aura shots layering the videos on top of each other to create this effect. This plain background allows focus and emphasis to be placed on the effect being created, as it highlights the meaning being conveyed. It is very mcyh stylised to make her seem pretty and cool which is what we want to do as well, however in this she looks somewhat serious which we do not want to bring it we want to create a fun lively atmosphere.

In the music video Wolf Alice also use an image of a beach which brings in the idea of the band being free spirited as typically you associate beach with freedom when you see an open horizon with lots of space. We will take this element and use it in our video bringing in the concept of beach to construct our hippie free spirited band. We will use the beach scene as a background making it a prominent part of our video
